who confessed his crimes against humanity
Attorney General Mahabuby Alam |
Attorney General Mahabuby Alam said that death-row war crimes convict Motiur Rahman Nizami is the first Jamaat-e-Islami leader who confessed his crimes against humanity during the war of liberation in 1971.
The AG made the remark while leaving the court on Wednesday after hearing defence’s arguments on appeal filed by Nizami challenging his death penalty awarded to him for wartime offences.
Nizami’s counsel Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, after the court concluded hearing defence’s arguments, urged to the Appellate Division to commute his client’s death sentence to life term imprisonment.
"From their (Nizami`s lawyers) submission, I understood that this is the first them their (Jamaat) lawyers admitted that the Jammat leader is guilty of war crimes and appealed to commute his client’s death sentence to life term imprisonment," Attorney General Mahabuby Alam told reporters.
"This is the first time I saw them (lawyers) clearly admitted their client`s guilt," he added.
